Thus opening up the fingerboard and enabling you to figure out many different chords. It can also help you to gain access to almost any key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any chord, or shape on the fingerboard can be made into a moveable chord as long as you understand where the root is, and you don\u2019t play any open strings. However, there are a few <strong>popular moveable chords and shapes<\/strong> that we can take a look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Every chord is named after its root note. In the following diagrams, the root note is indicated in red.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moveable Chords &#8211; Shape 1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For discussion purposes, we\u2019ll call this chord shape the \u201c<b>A-style<\/b>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-985 is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"127\" height=\"297\" src=\"http:\/\/simplymandolin.com\/media\/2017\/03\/moveable_a-style.png\" alt=\"Image of an \u201cA\u201d chord for mandolin.\" class=\"wp-image-985\"\/><figcaption>\u201cA-style\u201d moveable chord<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, <b>the root note for this chord shape is on the 4th string<\/b> (the G string) of the mandolin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we place this chord on the fingerboard with our index finger (the red dot) on the second fret of the G-string, we get an \u201cA\u201d chord (as seen in the diagram) because the second fret of the 4th string is an &#8220;A&#8221; note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the <b>notes on the 4th string<\/b> (the G-string) define, or <b>name our chord.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, you can move the shape up and down the neck, naming the resulting chord after note fretted on the 4th string. If we move the whole shape down a fret, so that our index finger (the red dot) is on the first fret of the G-string, we\u2019d have an \u201cAb\u201d chord (or a \u201cG#\u201d). As a result, the chord is named by the notes on the 2nd (A) string. If we place this chord on the fingerboard with our middle finger (the red dot) on the 5th fret of the A-string, then we get a \u201cD\u201d chord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this chord shape, the <b>notes on the 2nd string define, or name our chord<\/b>. We don\u2019t usually want the 1st string to sound, so we try to mute the 1st string with the fleshy part of our index finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we move this shape down 2 frets, so that our middle finger (the red dot) is on the third fret of the A-string, this will result in a \u201cC\u201d chord. It\u2019s a bit of a stretch for the fingers, but it frets the 1st string.
