Most people will recognize this melody as the tune to “The Battle of New Orleans”<\/strong>.
\nThe 8th of January<\/strong> was a tune written (or adapted) to commemorate Andrew Jackson’s 1815 victory over the British in a battle near New Orleans towards the end of the War of 1812<\/strong>. In 1936, Jimmy Driftwood added lyrics to the traditional tune and later recorded it as “The Battle of New Orleans”. It gained a lot of popularity in 1959 when it was recorded by singer Johnny Horton.<\/p>\n
