Angeline the Baker

February 26, 2016 by Cy...

Angeline the Baker is one of my favorite old time fiddle tunes. Many years ago, it was one of the first tunes I learned to play on the banjo. This arrangement is sort of based on that old banjo version, but it’s been “mandolized”.

This tune is in the Key of D. It has an A-part and a B-part, played AABB.

8th of January

January 16, 2016 by Cy...

Most people will recognize this melody as the tune to “The Battle of New Orleans”.
The 8th of January was a tune written (or adapted) to commemorate Andrew Jackson’s 1815 victory over the British in a battle near New Orleans towards the end of the War of 1812. In 1936, Jimmy Driftwood added lyrics to the traditional tune and later recorded it as “The Battle of New Orleans”. It gained a lot of popularity in 1959 when it was recorded by singer Johnny Horton.
