Most people will recognize this melody as the tune to “The Battle of New Orleans”.
The 8th of January was a tune written (or adapted) to commemorate Andrew Jackson’s 1815 victory over the British in a battle near New Orleans towards the end of the War of 1812. In 1936, Jimmy Driftwood added lyrics to the traditional tune and later recorded it as “The Battle of New Orleans”. It gained a lot of popularity in 1959 when it was recorded by singer Johnny Horton.
